Reference Materials for TurboBrake
Hose types and inserts:
Shimano BH90 and BH59 series hose has external diameter of 5mm.
- The Shimano BH59 (and BH63) is the most common type hose used on eScooters. It has a wide 2.3mm internal bore with 2.20-2.60mm insert, typically always gold. NAMI use BH59 on Logan, Kaabo/Zoom likewise although occasionally a narrower BH90 insert is observed factory-fitted (yet BH90 inserts seem to fit suitably).
- The Shimano BH90, less common on eScooters, has narrower 2.1mm internal bore with a slim 2.05-2.15 insert (barb) which was originally designated as silver in colour (aftermarket may not be silver).
The TEKTRO insert has a black o-ring to aid the seal with TEKTRO system having a generous 2.5mm internal bore. Some aftermarket TEKTRO inserts are 2.20-2.55mm making them interoperable with BH59 hose. Inserts for the original 2.5mm bore hose are wider, observed 2.50-2.80mm.
The size of the insert and cross-section of the hose will influence the outer diameter where the insert resides and ability to slide the olive over the hose. For example, eSN TurboBrake HB427-H & HB427-4S adopts a hose with slightly narrower outer diameter (4.9mm) so that the original larger size TEKTRO insert maintains suitable diameter for the 5.2mm Shimano BH90/59 olive. The original design TEKTRO olive has a larger internal diameter than BH olives (5.35mm) to accomodate clearing larger 5mm hose.
Inserts are generally factory fitted on hose supplied with callipers or fitted with a specialist tool. An inappropriate sized insert will simply not fit / obstruct olive or fail prematurely (leak).
eScootNow TurboBrake HB427-H & HB427-4S lines have a 4.9mm outer diameter with original (wider) TEKTRO sized inserts and Shimano BH series olive.
Olives
Olives are identical amongst the two Shimano BH types however internal diameter variances of up to 0.6mm are observed in the field. The original TEKTRO olives, designed for the larger inner diameter TEKTRO hose are a slightly different shape to Shimano BH. As mentioned above, TEKTRO olive has 5.35mm ID vs 5.20mm on Shimano. A Shimano olive is suitable where 4.9mm outer diamater hose is used.
