The TurboTight Powder Metallurgy Sintered Bronze Bearing (self-lubricating sleeve / bushing) is a porous self-lubricating bushing, often called an Oilite bearing. They are typically used to restore precise round holes in cast alloy, such as where the stem secures to folding hinge on eScooters.
Powder Metallurgy Process: Manufacturers compress metal powders (like copper, tin, or bronze) into a specific mold and heat it below its melting point. This bonds the particles together (called sintering), creating a solid yet porous metal structure. Because the metal has controlled microscopic pores (like a hard sponge), it is vacuum-soaked in lubricating oil. When the shaft spins, the friction and heat cause the oil inside the pores to expand and rise to the surface. This creates a thin film that keeps the shaft moving smoothly. When the machine cools down, the metal reabsorbs the oil.
Key characteristics:
Self-lubricating: Requires little to no grease during its lifespan (maintenance-free).
Low friction: Helps prevent wear and tear on fast-moving metal shafts.
Durable: Made of tough copper or brass alloys that resist high pressure and everyday wear.
Typically required to refactor precice round holes in alloy casting as part of heavy maintenance. Retrofitted by drilling larger hole of outer diameter then inserted to restore precision to matting parts, such as shafts and pins.
Naming convention, expressed in millimeters (mm):
Long form: ID (inner bore diameter) x OD (outer diameter) x Length
