Product Details
Brand: JP by eScootNow

The first image precisely reflects the item that will supplied when your order is fulfilled. 3rd image shows the wiring diagram (connectors and colours).

  • JP (Jinpin) Controller suits 48V models such Dragon GTR V2, GTS V2 and 48V GTR. Will also suit Dragon Cyclone (Non-Pro, 8" Dual Motor model) versions that use the black JST SM connectors (rather than white JST XH connectors, ref notes below).
  • Makes/models using this controller system are easily identified by having a JP throttle/display.
  • 48 volts (V), 25 amps (A) current = 1200 watts (w) at 48V or 1350w at 54V (per controller).
  • Low voltage cut-off at 37V.
  • Square Wave (no hall sensor wires).
  • Each controller is 90mm x 52mm x 30mm which is may be slightly slimmer and longer than the earlier versions.
  • Supplied as JP Factory spare, the OEM controller manufacturer adopted on these Dragon models including some Langfeite OEM models.
  • Typically required as replacement when display presents controller failure error (cube/box on display) or motor runs rough (like combustion engine missing a cylinder).
  • Order both A and B controller for both front and rear. It is worthwhile ordering A+B together as set/pair if renewing due to water ingress. This also provides better likelihood of controllers being interoperable (matching pair).

Notes:

  1. On most Dragon models without keylock, the orange wire shown below needs to be removed from position 6 and re-inserted to position 5. This enables the controller to power-up when the display/throttle is turned on. Without this adaption, a controller error may be thrown.
  2. The low voltage cut-off defines the voltage at which the controller will "cut off" and no longer draw any power from the battery pack to prevent excessive discharge. The value is represented on the controller nameplate. As mentioned, the product is factory configured to 37 volts, this is fixed and cannot be user-defined. If voltage drops to this level, the controller will turn off (shut down). This will typically occur under heavy throttle at low battery level (watch the voltage reading on the display when riding). It is one of the several methods of low voltage protection. Battery Management System (BMS) low voltage protection, which is a secondary protection, works in similar manner though self-resettable fuse in the BMS kicks in to power off the scooter, the scooter cannot be powered on until charger is connected. The BMS Low Voltage Cut-Off is typically marked on the battery pack nameplate. The third mechanism to protect from undervoltage is the P setting (throttle/display user manual), P1: "Undervoltage", this value can be user-set in 0.5v increments. The P1 setting provides a "graceful" implementation by reducing throttle (effectively mode/gear 1, or a "limp" mode) when the threshold is reached to protect excessive low voltage on the battery chemistry. For 48V (see the reference graph) systems with high endurance cells, eSN recommends this be set to 42 volts as the 37V current limit on the controller is pretty low. You can watch your voltage drop when throttling heavy on low battery. High output packs such as those on the GTR v2 controllers when paired with high demand battery packs will drop less voltage than the same controller on high endurance packs.

Undervoltage handled is undertaken by the controller (progressive "limp modes") in accordance with the following table for 48V.

  3. Naming convention A (Front) and B (Rear) derived from Jinpin and are consistent with common terminology adopted by Bike Scooter City and reflective in their product listings. This convention is also adopted on Zero makes/models, whereas the opposite A/B convention is used by Kaabo where A denotes the Rear Master. In all instances, the display/throttle and the bulk of the other other cables connect to the Rear controller. The front controller is is the secondary or slave, Kaabo refer to the front as Deputy, Jinpin simply adopt designation type A.
  4. Consider physical accommodation if you have the older, larger enclosure version controllers as these newer version controllers are in a more slimline case than earlier versions (narrower but longer). It may be necessary to re-position components inside the deck to accommodate the newer, slimmer size. Image below shows the older size:
  5. Other regional stockists (online) include Bike Scooter City Sumner Park (Brisbane) and eOzzie Melbourne.
  6. Note specific to Dragon GTR V2, GTS V2: This item is suitable, no specific sourcing notes apply to these models.
  7. Note specific to Dragon Cyclone series, newer Cyclone Pro models (generally 2024 onwards) and Cyclone 10" Single adopt a Langfeite branded controller and wire collection board. These variants adopt white JST XHB connectors rather, whereas this controller uses black JST SM connectors.
    1. For the non-Pro (that is, the 8" dual motor model), this controller is likely suitable..
    2. For the newer Cyclone Single Motor model (10"), which is a 52V system on 30A (introduced early 2024), you will find the system is most likely using JST XHB and therefore require this alternative controller.

Check your Cyclone model to see if it has XHB or SM connectors. The image below shows JST XHB connectors and XHB wire collection board on a late 23 / early 24 Cyclone Pro:
  8. Notes specific to Dragon GTS and GTR (single motor, the non-V2):

These models transitioned from 36 volt to 48 volt system sometime around late 2021/early 2022.

For 36V models

This item is not suitable for either of the 36V versions of GTS and GTR. Refer to the 36V 19A controller for earlier 36V models of Dragon GTS and GTR (non-V2).

BSC have listed: POWER CONTROLLER FOR DRAGON GTR AND GTS 36V (SINGLE MOTOR), which e-Ozzie list as separate products for GTS and GTR, with the later offered in two variants (2021 Older Version and 2022 New Version, assuming this is 36V vs 48V). The product images suggests the 36V controller is current limited to 21 amps, which is 756 watts (derived from 36V x 21A). At full charge (42 volts) this would deliver 882 watts. This is about as much as you want to discharge from the GTS and GTR battery pack (and likewise for 48V GTS systems). The 19A variant is 72 watts less than the original 21A, although the 19A may be a better, more conservative option on demand as the chemistry in the battery cells of these older models are nearing EOL and has negligible difference in power/torque.

For 48V models, this one is a little more complicated, due to differences with battery. The 48V GTR delivers more power (high discharge) and hence has 25 amp controllers, the 48V GTS has more endurance (and hence cannot support higher discharge).

GTR:

This item is suitable for 48V GTR, choose option "B (Rear / Main)".

As mentioned earlier, E-Ozzie list Dragon GTR Controller with two variants: an older and newer version. The variation is assumed to refer to the differences in voltage between the 1st Gen 2021 36V and the subsequent 2022 generation 48V versions. Note the product images for each variation are identical (36V, 21A), there is no image for the 48V version. Bike Scooter City do not list a seperate / dedicated GTR 48V controller. Given the 48V GTR has peak nameplate of 1200w with high discharge cells (~3000mAh), this 25A controller variant option "B (Rear / Main)" is suitable for 48V GTR. This will deliver the full 1200w peak specification (48V x 25A) and is within the discharge output capability supported by the battery pack.

GTS

The 48V GTS has long endurance cells (~2500mAh), this means it cannot sustain the higher discharge rates of the 48V GTR. The current GTS product specification has peak nameplate of 800 watts, same as the 36V version but uses an 18A controller (18Ax48V=864w) rather than the 21 amp versions on the 36V model (21Ax36V=756w).

eSN recommends the 48V 20A controller for the 48V model GTS which is 48 watts than the original 21A controller. The 20A may be a better, more conservative option on demand as the chemistry in the battery cells and has negligible difference in power/torque.

Alternatively, this 25A current limited controller can be fitted into a 48V GTS, configure the display/throttle P-settings to no more than 84% (or whatever you would calculate from the original controller's nameplate amp rating). Setting this limit will reduce excessive power draw that will otherwise prematurely degrade the long term health of the battery (amongst many other reasons). Mark this on the case of the display/throttle with a paint pen or similar, so the owner, or subsequent owners do not exceed this current.

8. Evolution of controller and connectors

Jinpin make incremental revisions to these controllers. For example, the earlier controllers were of different size (larger/fatter) enclosure. You will observe some variations with the wiring and number of connectors, often these have been "bolted on" for additional functionality, such as security devices and other switching instrumentation. Typically the newer revisions are "backward compatible" with previous versions. The first product image shown reflects precisely the stock on hand and that is what you will be working with. The wiring can generally be determined easily from colours and some logical thinking, with some help of the additional photos and diagrams on this product page. It is good practice to sticking the connectors down with Blue Tac adhesive and taking a photograph of the connectors, polarity/orientation and wire colours. Many of the colour conventions adopted are universal, such as the wire colours adopted on Kaabo makes.
